Hitsville Drunks' latest album, "Sincerely Average," is a rollercoaster of mediocrity that had us reaching for a stiff drink by the time we hit the third track. The band seems to have taken the title of the album quite literally, as there is nothing particularly outstanding or innovative about the music on offer here. The opening track, "Half-Hearted Anthem," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its tepid melodies and lacklustre vocals. It's the kind of song you'd probably hear at your local dive bar, playing in the background as you drown your sorrows in a cheap pint of beer. As we trudge through the album, tracks like "Mundane Melodies" and "Bland Ballad" only serve to reinforce the overall sense of averageness that pervades "Sincerely Average." It's as if Hitsville Drunks took a handful of cliches from the indie rock playbook and threw them together without any real thought or creativity. That being said, there are moments of fleeting inspiration scattered throughout the album. The guitar work on "Snooze-fest Serenade" shows glimpses of promise, while the lyrics on "Yawn-inducing Yodel" hint at deeper emotional depths. Ultimately, though, "Sincerely Average" is a forgettable offering from a band that seems content to tread water in the sea of mediocrity. Hitsville Drunks have yet to prove themselves as anything more than just that - drunks in Hitsville.
