I had the pleasure - or maybe it's more accurate to say the horror - of listening to F.K.U.'s newest release, 1981. This jewel case of an album is a rollercoaster of thrash metal and horror movie nostalgia, with enough cheesy references to make even the most die-hard genre fans cringe. From the opening track "Killer Instinct" to the closer "Friday the 13th Part 2," F.K.U. takes listeners on a trip back to the gory glory days of 80s slasher flicks. The band's blend of shredding guitars, relentless drums, and guttural vocals is a perfect match for the blood-soaked lyrics that would make Freddy Krueger proud. But as much as I wanted to love this album, I couldn't shake the feeling that it's all been done before. F.K.U. may have killer chops, but when it comes to originality, they're more like a cover band playing in a dingy dive bar. That being said, there's no denying the sheer fun factor of 1981. It may not be breaking any new ground, but it's a solid dose of headbanging nostalgia that will have you reaching for your hockey mask and chainsaw in no time. So if you're in the mood for some mindless, blood-soaked fun, give F.K.U.'s 1981 a spin. Just make sure to lock your doors and windows first - you never know what horrors may be lurking in the shadows.
