The Artisanals' latest album, Zi, is a delightful mishmash of indie rock, folk, and Americana that is as charming as it is eclectic. Drawing on influences as wide-ranging as The Band, Wilco, and even a hint of Tom Petty, the South Carolina-based band crafts a sound that is uniquely their own. Opening track "Roll with it" sets the tone for the album with its infectious guitar riffs and catchy melodies. Lead singer Johnny Delaware's vocals are earnest and soulful, adding depth to each song's storytelling. Tracks like "Violet Light" and "Angel 42" showcase the band's ability to seamlessly blend rock and folk elements, creating a sound that feels both modern and timeless. The instrumentation is tight and expertly arranged, with lush harmonies and intricate guitar work throughout. However, some tracks like "Mountain Song" and "Drag" feel a bit derivative, lacking the originality that makes the rest of the album so compelling. While these songs are certainly enjoyable, they don't quite reach the same level of innovation as the standout tracks. Overall, Zi is a solid effort from The Artisanals, showcasing their knack for crafting well-crafted, genre-blurring music. With a bit more experimentation and risk-taking, this band has the potential to make an even bigger impact in the indie music scene.
